what exactly didn't you understad?

if your very new to gimp you might want to find a tutorial on how to use the tools, since this tutorial doesn't intend to teach you how to draw a rectangle or how to use the gradient fill, its only trying to show you how to use the pre-made gradient to archive the glassy effect.

And that doesnt look great! i want to make it look more 3d but how do i do that?

OK maybe this is a dumb question but how do I just make it a button without the white background? When I delete the background layer and save it, it doesn't save just the button but also a white background. I'd appreciate the help!

if you delete the background and save it as it must be saved as either png or Gif or any other format that supports transparent backgrounds.

to get smooth lines avoid from applying the gradient more than once if you make a mistake or want to try another color Press CTRL+Z to go back and then apply it. that way you get clean smooth edges.

you need to adjust the Corner roundness found in the "tools option dialog" . you must have the selection tool selected for the options to show up in the "tools option dialog".

the pre-made gradients doesn't show up in Gimp?
I've downloaded it and saved it in the folder Program files/gimp-2.0
It shows there but not in Gimp itself?

Maybe to do with the version? I use Gimp 2.4.6 - his help-funktion doesn't work either....

I have 2.4.5 and it worked. Did you click refresh gradients?

You need to copy the .ggr files to C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\gradients

Making a rectangular selection is extremely easy. Applying a gradient is easy. Typing text is obvious. What is not obvious is to figure out how to re-size the canvas and save the image as a button with transparency. And you gave no instructions for that.
