Split-toning in GIMP

wow, very cool effect. Simple but very effective!

theres a plug-in for this exact thing thats just a click of a button, but it is nice how to know how to do it manually

This can be a cool technique. I haven't done a good one yet though.
You can cut out the merge step by using flood fill in overlay mode on the duplicate layers.

I don't know if you know this but there is a plug-in that does this. I'm sure it does the exact same thing. You already have it installed on your Gimp (person who wrote this tutorial). Just go to FX-Foundry> Color> Split Tone. Then you can choose what colours you want and change the settings.

thanks Colin. i have seen the plugin. doing it manually dose have its advantages though.

you can control the amount of overlay colour to the image as i did in the last step for example, the plugin doesn't give you that.

I had been using linux for the past 7-8 years(gimp comes bundled with most of the Linux flavors)..
even though i know some basic facts about gimp the rest of the features was always an enigma for me...
I had always tried to master it but had tough luck.. :(
Few weeks back I came across your tutorials and was surprised by the simplicity and how easily you tamed the giant.. and the greatest thing is that i was able to replicate the results with perfection...
I am happy that you helped me realize the potential of gimp.. I always disliked photoshop and it counterparts.. as i have an aversion to itz proprietary nature..

Actually it does. However, the downfall in the script is that it desaturates the main image. Doing it manually as you have shown leaves that option to the artist. The script is cool, but c'mon... its an easy technique with tons of potential!

is there any way to rotate the angle of the brush in gimp?
also to use multiple font faces using text tool.?

I think there's a button where you just press it and split-toning happens, but this is really useful as well :]

Great Tutorial~ I used a different picture and tried this and I absolutely loved it. I tried the "split-toning button" on the same picture with the same colors and it didn't turn out satisfactory by any means. Doing it manually makes a BIG difference. Thankssomuch for the awesome lesson! ^^

Nice effect, but everything I add the newlayer and fill it with the orange, the image turns green instead of the sepia-ish color you got, and everything looks off.

Very nice tutorial. Please keep 'em coming and help everyone break the shackles of the adobe bloat. p'shop is a great tool but gimp is just as good and with the satisfaction of knowing that you haven't paid a fortune. I mentioned gimp at a local camera club and they all thought i was being funny (gimp IS a strange name!). All these pro photographers hadn't got a clue. This week a bigwig photographer was visting and i mentioned gimp and to everyones shock it was the only thing he used!! Now everyone wants it!! Anyway keep the great tuts coming, they are essential!
