i actually saved it as .pat

i actually saved it as .pat so it can be used as a pattern inside gimps pattern dialog.

.XCF is GIMP's source file but it won't work with any other program.

jpg/png/gif all have there pros & cons here is a nice article to read http://info.eps.surrey.ac.uk/FAQ/standards.html
