Warning! contamination ahead. suite up and get ready for an awesome effect tutorial :)
In this tutorial we will use various overlay techniques, the pen tool and how to use stock images to add texture to the design.

Getting started.

In this GIMP tutorial i used two elements. the nuclear sign and the watercolor background so go ahead and download them from the following links.

Nuclear sign: i can't remember where i got this freebie icon so I've placed it on our sever for download
Water color texture can be downloaded from Go Media's free Watercolor Pack sampler, download

Step 1

Create a 600x450 image. if your going to use it as a wallpaper i suggest you create something bigger.

Step 2

Fill the background with black and place our nuke sign in the centre of the canvas.

Step 3

Now right click on the nuke icon layer and click on Alpha to Selection, then go to Filters>Light and shadows>Drop shadows, set the settings to Offset X:0, Offset Y:0, Blur radius:380, color a5ef17, Opacity 100 , and un-tick "Allow resizing".

De-select selection by going to Select>None . this is how it should look

Step 4

Now Repeat step 3 but this time set the blur radius to 100.

Step 5

Next open mdp-watercolour60.jpg from the zip file you downloaded off go media and open it in gimp, then resize it to 700x990 by going to Image>Scale image.

Step 6

Next change the image to black&white by going to colors>Desaturate. then go to colors> Brightness and contrast
and set Brightness to -80 and contrast to 118.

Step 7

Now insert the watercolour image above all the other layers and then rotate the image on an angle of 128 and set the layer mode to Overlay.

Step 8

Next turn off the textured watercolor layer by clicking on the eye icon in the layer dialog this is so it doesn't get in our way.

Step 9

Next grab the Path tool and create a curved path. the idea is to start all paths from the edge of the icon, as if its coming from behind it.

Step 10

Create a new layer. change your foreground color to yellow fdf23c and with the path still active go to Edit>Stroke path and set the value to 3px.
note* if your path disappears go to the paths dialog and right click>path tool.

This is how it should look

Step 11

Select the easer tool, erase part of the overlapping line so that it looks like its coming from behind the icon. then use the Circle fuzzy (19) easer brush to get a faded effect for the end points.

Step 12

Next will add a glow to our stroke by going to the path dialog then "right click to > Path tool" on the path we previously drew.
then select Circle Fuzzy (17) from the brushes dialog and go to Edit>Stroke Path and select "Stroke with paint tool. finally set the layer to overlay.

Step 13

As we did in step 11 use the Eraser tool to clean up the stroke ends.

Step 14

Create three more strokes each on there own layer with each layer's opacity set to 39.

Step 15

Using the same technique as the glow strokes in step 12, will create some particle effects on two of the paths.

Create a new layer, Go to the path dialog then "right click> Path tool" on the path we previously created. Then select Sparks from the brushes tab and go to Edit>Stroke Path and select "Stroke with paint tool. repeat this to the top left stroke and when your done set layer mode to Overlay.

Step 15

We could stop here but i think this adds a nice touch to it :) with the "spark brush" randomly apply some here and there, not so much though.

Step 16

Re-activate the watercolour texture layer by clicking on he eye icon and set its Opacity to 85. and thats it :)

The gimp XCF source file is attached below as always. enjoy!

@ healers_charm: the link was mentioned in the biggining of the tutorial, here is the watercolor image http://www.gomedia.us/arsenal/freestuff.php

@"i don't know what your doing wrong with the resizing". are you sure you downloaded the image of the watercolor from Gomedia's site?, because if your using the one i have in this tutorial then it doesn't need to be resized.

Re: the resizing problem

I think you need to click the chain link symbol next to the sizes. They're scaling in ratio, you need to unlink them.

Gimper's picture

hi Kristarella. your right

hi Kristarella.
your right but it shouldn't need to because the correct width when resizing the hight to 700x is 990x using the ratio chain.

Re: Contaminated Effect

at the first part when you are supposed to put the nuke in the middle, i use File>open as layer and it doesnt give me a nuke sign layer, only the background layer. how should i add the nuke sign?

when doing step 4 make sure

when doing step 4 make sure you still have the nuke icon under selection by right clicking on the nuke icon layer and click on Alpha to Selection.

you might want to download the source file just to help with the layers order.

A nice effect to try at Step 5, is to go to Filter>Render>Line Nova .... Use default settings (200 lines) may take a while, but the outcome on the drop shadow is superb. I will get an image up soon.

Mine is kind of different then yours, because when you did the lines-around-icon part, I couldn't get it exactly right. It didn't look the same as yours, because I didn't know which layer to put it over, under, etc.

Awesome tut mate :)

One thing I'd suggest though:

For the ends of the lines, rather than using the 'Circle Fuzzy' brush do this:

-Right click on the layer then 'Add Layer Mask' (select 'White Full Opacity').
-Select the Blend tool, set your foreground colour to black and then use the FG->Transparent gradient. Apply this to the end of your lines.
-Right click on the layer then 'Apply Layer Mask'.

It gets a better result or less effort I think.

Re: Re: Contaminated Effect

Look in your layer tab in the GIMP window with all your tools, if u don't see this tab, press Ctrl+L. So once in the layer tab, just go to the drop down menu at the top next to mode and you will see the whole list of modes, including overlay! ;)

By the way, this effect is amazing, great tutorial and great results! thx a lot, so many possibilities this opens.

Visitor's picture

Re: Contaminated Effect

OK, so I found that...with your help. Thanks. However, when I turn it on, the watercolor just disappears. Is that supposed to happen? I am thinking it has something to do with the way I am adding the watercolor image. I am just pasting it in, should it work like that? When I paste it in, in the layer dialog it says it is a "floating selection." It doesn't look that way in the tutorial. Should I be changing it somehow so that it is an actual layer and not a floating selection?

Gimper's picture

Re: Contaminated Effect

Once you paste it into gimp and you get the "floating selection", you need to click on the "Create a new layer" button.

That should do it.

Hello everyone. Just so you

Hello everyone.

Just so you would know, I am in love with this site, as it utilizes the very purposes for which the GIMP was created, even in '96.

On thing I may recommend, as a more stable and controllable way to fade out the "rays" in the image.

Add a layer mask (white - full opacity) to the layer. This is done by right-clicking the layer and clicking "Add Layer Mask..." and leaving all fields unchanged from their defaults.

With the MASK selected (not the layer), select the area around the tips of the rays. Use the gradient labeled "FG to BG (RGB)", with #000000 (black) as your foreground and #ffffff (white) as your background (we call this the 'default blend').

Blend from the tip of the ray to the end of the selection. For a more gradual fade, select a larger area of the ray. For a more abrupt fade, vice versa. This method was the one intended for fading from hue to alpha.

A loyal contributor to The XCF Program,

Spencer Kimball
