Engraved Text with GIMP

Average: 3.7 (57 votes)

Remember a while back one of our forum members asked how to engrave text in GIMP, well this GIMP tutorial will show you how.

The technique is quite simple once you learn how its done, so lets get started.

Step 1

Create a new image and fill the background layer with Brown 382600, looks allot like chocolate :) .

Step 2

Select the Text tool and type in some text, you can use what ever font you wish i chose a free font called Tondo

Step 3

Now Right click on the text layer and click on "Alpha to selection", this should create a selection around our text.

Step 4

Select the Background layer to which we will apply the engraved text to, then go to "Filters>Map>Bump Map" and apply the same settings as shown in the screenshot

Once you have all the settings right hit OK then deselect the selection by going to "Select None" and finally deleting our no longer needed text layer. that's it you should be seeing the exact same result as mine. :)

Yeah, I've noticed that the site wasn't getting updated as well, good job gimper.net is still active. Thanks for the tutorial, I've added it to howtogimp.com (http://howtogimp.com/2008/06/05/engraved-text-effect-in-the-gimp/)

Re: Engraved Text with GIMP

I would like to know how you would make a cd icon. An example of the icon would be at gimp's main tutorial webpage, but alas, they only show you how to make a tv icon, which isn't very useful in my case.

I'm sorry, but I just can't

I'm sorry, but I just can't get this to work. I've got an .xcf with several layers, but when I try follow these steps on the background layer, nothing happens. When I remove the text layer there's nothing there. Has anybody any idea where I'm going wrong? (It works fine if I just add text to an image that contains a single layer with a plain background)

Only 1 thing: The font you used isn't Tando, it's Tondo ;)
Tando is a Naturist Club..

Hi Gimper. Like your

Hi Gimper. Like your tutorial, but the visitor above was correct - this is embossed text not engraved. Engraved would be going down into the surface, not raised up above it as this is (see the shadows for example - they are on the surface, impossible if the text was engraved).

Keep up the good work :)

just want to point out,

just want to point out, rather pedantically i suppose, that it could be viewed both as embossed or engraved depending on the way one looks at it.
take the necker cube illusion as an example.

on another note, i've unfortunately had trouble with this tut. it worked for me on a freshly opened document, but on trying to use it on another file of mine, i had no success... :( can't quite figure out why.
