Nice tutorial, you could have used the select by color tool, cant remember its name, and selected all of the statue with a feather of about 10px to 5px, then inverted the selection, then you wouldn't have had to erase evrything around the statue. When using the image selector, hold down shift while you click to select multiple areas of different color, and if you accidentaly click on an area you dont want, hold down ctrl and click back on the area to remove it! You can also change its sensitivy to colors by changing the tools settings for saturation, i think its saturation, but i dont have gimp on this computer to find out lol, this should make the task easier and more precise!
