Learn How To Make an Awersome Looking Orb

Average: 3.3 (63 votes)

In this tutorial our member Pienose will show you how to create a nice awesome glossy orb using several techniques.

This is what you can achieve follow this tutorial

Step one

Start by creating a new document at 600X600 pixels. Then garb your ellipse select tool (E) and make a 500X500 selection in the middle, i set some guides to help me out, just grab the ruler and drag across to 300.

Step two

now lets get some nice blue colours, I used 194f92 and 1c72dd but you can use whatever you want. Then draw a radial gradient from the center to the edge of the selection.

Step three

Now make a new layer and name it 'glow' left click on the circle layer and select alpha to selection, now make a circular selection nere the bottom of your circle, but make sure you hold ctrl! now go to selection-feather and feather it by 100 pixels. fill this with white, then alpha to select the circle like before. Now invert the selection and press delete. you should end up with something like this-

Step four

Ok, now alpha to select the glow layer, invert it and make a new layer named 'glow2' fill this with black. Then do as before and select the circle layer, invert and delete on the new glow2 layer.

Step five

Make a new layer called 'shine' and make a circular selection at the top of the circle. Now get the gradient tool and select the fg to transparent gradient, make sure the colour is white. Now make the gradient from the top of the circle to the bottom of the selection. you should end up with this-

Step six

Ok, now duplicate that layer. Here is where the magic starts to happen =P! Set the glow, glow2 and both the shine layers to overlay. Ooh! now that's diferent huh? but not quite as nice as the preview, wait for the next step!

Step seven

Here's the really cool bit! go to filters-distorts-lens distortion and enter - 10, 60, 1, 1, 0, 0 to all the fields, top to bottom. Do this to all of your layers. you will notice that the circle layer is slightly transparent now, just duplicate it and merge it down.

The final result!

I am just trying out this tutorial, im quite newbie at this. But when i opened a document at 600 by 600 i had a white background and onyl one layer, why on the picture is there two layers and the grey anf white shaded checkers design. Did i miss a step or something.

God i must be dumb none of those steps make any sense, it like these tutorials were made for advanced gimpsters. I have no clue of one step from another i can't get past step one.

Nice effect, simple in

Nice effect, simple in hind-sight. - to the author, it does get comfusing, and remember we are stupid! please try not to over simplify your explaination, eg the phrase "then do as before....", do what as before? before when? with what expected result?

pienose's picture

ok, right, thanks for all the feedback! and yes this is a rather advanced tutorial, but it's also my first so bare with me ;)

I might have a go at doing this a bit better, but I would rather wait and do another tutorial. But then you'll have to wait until I get an idea =P

pienose's picture

ok, I probably won't be doing

ok, I probably won't be doing any more tuts here since I just picked up photoshop but I will try and explain step three, gimper can put it into the main post if he wants. Here goes-

you have your circle selected and you get your circle select tool, then holding ctrl (to subtract from the bule circle selection), you draw a smaller circle at the bottom of your blue circle. then invert this and fill it with white This is where I should have posted another screenshot but you should have a whole load of white. You only want white inside the circle so you select that and invert it then hit delete. I really hope this helps!

Step three makes no fucking sense. When I do it, I end up with the entire thing glowing EXCEPT the part that should be. I tried inverting the selection but then EVERYTHING glows!

This was interesting to try,

This was interesting to try, but as a beginner I found the explanation a little to breezy in some parts (ie breezing over the step-by-step) and a little to technical in others (using terms like alpha select with no explanation).

I did end up with some spheres with light effects -- just not what the end result of the tutorial aspired to.

I realize that step-by-step is tedious, especially writing for beginners. I did the Surreal Art tutorial and found it very clear; my end result matched perfectly. THAT was clearly instructed.

Very cool tutorial. How do

Very cool tutorial. How do you do the shadow effect at the bottom? I imagine it is a oval ellipse feathered black in a new layer behind the globe, but in front of the white. Am I right?

A for effort, and your end

1

A for effort, and your end result looks very nice, but your instructions are very poorly written. You need to stop breezing through things and actually take the time to carefully write them down step-by-step. You take far too much for granted, and we can't read your mind. Just become something seems like it goes without saying to you doesn't mean this is the case for everyone else.

Hey everyone. Yes, Step 3 is

2

Hey everyone. Yes, Step 3 is a bit confusing if you read it fast, but he did post a comment showing that he tried to explain it better.

Step Three:
- Now make a new layer and name it 'Glow'
- Right*-click on the circle layer (In the layer dialog menu) and select "Alpha to Selection"
- Now make a circular selection near* the bottom of your circle, but make sure you hold ctrl!
(What he means is, after selecting the whole circle, hold down ctrl, and make a circle near the bottom of the circle-selection. *Holding down ctrl, subtracts from your original selction.*)
(-Invert the selection by going to Select->Invert)
-(Using the bucket fill tool) Fill this with white
- Now (go to the menu bar and press) Select*->feather
- (In the feather menu) Feather it by 100 pixels.

I think this should help you get through Step Three, but I might have messed a few things up.

Hope this helps.
